Help Gainesville capture history ahead of bicentennial

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Oct. 19, 2020) – In November 2021, the city of Gainesville turns 200 years old. Needless to say, a celebration is in order!

The city’s kicking off the party planning now and looking to document the love people have for Gainesville ahead of the official bicentennial Nov. 30, 2021. The goal is to share pieces of the community’s centuries-old history online with the public, starting this November, at least monthly for the entire year leading up to the actual day.

City staff would love to see/hear any old photos, video clips, soundbites, newspaper/magazine clippings, letters, old Gainesville memorabilia or various other pieces of local history residents and visitors can offer. Memories shared with the city will be featured on social media platforms, as well as the city’s website, gainesville.org.

A side note – the more information you have about your submission, the better. For example, if you have an old class photo, it would be phenomenal to share the names of people pictured, the date the photo was taken (or at least the year), at what school the photo was captured and who taught the class. The more details you can provide, the more enjoyable the trip down memory lane! However, we understand history can be difficult to keep up with sometimes. Don’t let a few missing details discourage you from sharing your blast from the past.

If you or someone you know is interested in sharing a piece of Gainesville’s history, please reach out to Gainesville Public Relations Manager Christina Santee by sending an email to csantee@gainesvillega.gov. You may send submissions to this email address or drop them off in person from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the Gainesville Convention & Visitors Bureau, now located at 300 Henry Ward Way, Suite 100 (first floor), in the City of Gainesville Administration Building (brown brick building). Be sure to include your name, city of residence and a telephone number with your submission in case city staff need to reach you with questions.
