Gainesville Redistricting Map Approved by Justice Department

The City of Gainesville received notice this week from the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division that “the Attorney General does not interpose any objection” to the 2011 redistricting plan submission. This means the ward boundaries commonly referenced as Proposal 2RE (PROP2RE) have been approved and can be implemented with the next City Council election slated for November 2013.
The 2011 Redistricting Project began in April 2011 after the 2010 Census Data revealed population changes in each of the city wards. Staff worked with the Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office to create the map. After several public meetings, Council adopted the map on October 18, 2011 via Home Rule Ordinance 2011-02. The redistricting plan was submitted to the Department of Justice on November 17, 2011.
