Learn the ins and outs of 2 Old Crows, what makes it a Must-Try Monday-worthy business and why you should make it a destination the next time you're near downtown Gainesville by reviewing the exclusive Q+A with Gerald Crow below.
Q: When did your business open and where? If your business has operated at other locations, please list those.
A: We opened in April 2022 at 804 Washington St., just off the square, and we moved to the square in January 2023.
Q: How long have you been operating on the historic square in downtown Gainesville?
A: We will celebrate one year on the square in January 2024. However, the Creative Cuts salon business has operated in this space for the past 32 years, [with] which we share the space. Creative Cuts and Blades Salon are still in business, they have [just] moved to the back to allow us [use of] the front of the store.
Q: What drew you to operate your business in downtown Gainesville?
A: The revitalization of the square, and being able to be a part of the revitalization.
Q: What kinds of products and/or services does your business offer to the public?
A: Our primary offerings are collectibles, retro and vintage home decor items, [and] some antiques. As well, [we have] a collection of "Made in the USA" gift items, including garden items, wind chimes, artisan handcrafted wares (greeting cards, fabric, crochet, wood), candles, soaps and cocktail/latte mixers to name a few.
Q: Can you give some examples of unique products and/or services you offer that aren’t easily replicated elsewhere in town?
A: We strive to offer as many "Made in the USA" products as possible, and we also offer many artisan handcrafted [and] locally made items that you may not find at other stores. Our consignment program also brings [in] many unique and unusual retro, vintage and antique [treasures].
Q: What offerings are you most proud of and why? Give us the scoop!
A: We are especially proud to offer our "Made in the USA" items and handcrafted artisan items. Small business[es] supporting homegrown products have a direct positive financial impact on our community, state and nation.
Q: Do you target a specific audience? If so, can you please specify?
A: We don't have a specific audience. The majority of our customers come from all age groups and backgrounds.
Q: If you aim to target everyone, can you please explain how and through what products and/or services?
A: Posting ... our items on social media and our website helps us to reach a broad audience.
Q: What is your favorite “must try” item you offer and why?
A: We have a few! Right now, our rock soaps and luxe cocktail cubes are our favorites. The rock soaps are hypoallergenic, [have a] light fragrance and look like "jewels in the rough". They are gentle and look amazing. The luxe cocktail cubes are a unique sugar cube mixer that you just have to try to believe – and they're only 16 calories per serving, organic and vegan.
Q: In your own words, what makes your business a positive addition to the downtown cityscape?
A: We feel that we have brought a bit of uniqueness to the downtown area, as Gainesville did not have a consignment shop in this area. With the addition of our gift items, we feel that we've brought a quaint and cozy shopping experience to downtown.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
A: Steve and myself are proud to be a part of the Gainesville community and supporting this great revitalization.
