[ARCHIVED] Gainesville seeks input on proposed WeGo fare increase

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (June 28, 2023) – The City of Gainesville will soon host the second of two public hearings planned to collect feedback on a proposed fare increase for WeGo, the City's public transit service operated by Hall Area Transit (HAT).

WeGo provides on-demand vanpool service to residents and visitors seeking rides to and from destinations in Gainesville-Hall County. Since expanding WeGo in July 2022 from operating only within City limits to all of Hall County, data shows 90% of passengers pay the minimal fee of just $2 for rides 5 miles and under.

"The demand for WeGo service has continued to rise since it launched in December 2020," said Community Service Center Director Phillippa Lewis Moss, who oversees HAT. "There was a time when demand was only high during the morning hours when most people travel to work, but now the system is constantly busy."

The proposed fare increase includes the following adjustments:

  • Trips taken after 6:30 p.m. will cost $4 up from $2, and
  • Trips taken any time of day in excess of 5 miles will cost $1 for every additional mile up from 50 cents

The fare increase, if approved, will take effect Monday, July 31.

The final public hearing (in person) is slated for noon Thursday, June 29, and will be held in front of HAT headquarters, located at 687 Main St., Gainesville. The first public hearing was held Saturday, June 24, via Zoom.

Individuals who cannot make the meeting are welcome to submit their comments in writing to Moss via email, [email protected], or by letter to HAT headquarters.
