[ARCHIVED] Gainesville: Fire Hydrant Design Contest now open

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Jan. 24, 2022) – The Gainesville Department of Water Resources (DWR) has kicked off the 2022 Elementary School Fire Hydrant Design Contest ahead of Drinking Water Week May 1-7.

Celebrating Drinking Water Week gives DWR an opportunity to promote public awareness of safe drinking water and educate the community on Gainesville's role in providing such.

“This contest is a great way to open up the conversation of the value of safe drinking water and what Gainesville does to distribute and protect it,” said Gainesville Environmental Monitoring Coordinator Tyler Sims.

The contest is open to all kindergarten through 5th-grade students in Gainesville-Hall County, including homeschooled children, who may submit one design each. Students are asked to color the hydrant template available here, and include on their artwork their name, school, grade and teacher's name. DWR requests all submissions be mailed to the following address:

Attn: Kristen Howard

757 Queen City Parkway

Gainesville, Ga 30501

All submissions must be received or postmarked by April 1. Three winners will be chosen to receive prizes and have their designs painted onto fire hydrants within City limits. Find additional guidelines and information here.

DWR's public education staff also provide supplemental presentations for classrooms during Drinking Water Week to dive deeper into the subject. These presentations are not limited to Drinking Water Week, and are available upon request on the Conservation & Outdoor Resources page of gainesville.org.

“Our group is happy to offer tailored water education presentations to all groups and classrooms across Gainesville-Hall County," said Gainesville Water Conservation Specialist Kristen Howard. "Let us know how we can help you make a 'splash' in your next school lesson or meeting!”
