GAINESVILLE, Ga. (June 17, 2021) – The City of Gainesville has announced the 2021 recipients of You’re the Reason Scholarship funds.

The seven winners were announced Tuesday, June 15, by Mayor Danny Dunagan during the regular meeting of the Gainesville City Council, held in the municipal courtroom at the Gainesville Public Safety Complex.

"Here in Gainesville, we believe in helping one another, especially our young people, who will become community leaders," he said.

The You’re the Reason Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by Gainesville City employees who give annually to the Community Trust Fund. The scholarship is available to graduating seniors whose parent or parents is/are employed by the City of Gainesville. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution in fall 2021.

Scholarship funding comes from both the Community Trust Fund and sponsors of the Spring Chicken Festival.

Receiving $500 each were Bethany Beebe, a recent Flowery Branch High School graduate who will study biology at the University of Georgia to become a physician assistant; Noble Hill, a recent Lanier High Longhorns graduate who will study biology at @KennesawStateUniversity to become a marine biologist; Erica Martinez, a recent Chestatee High School graduate who will study science in nursing at the UNG - University of North Georgia to become a nurse practitioner; Braden Simms, a recent West Hall High School graduate who will study criminal justice at Piedmont University; Madison Swaney, a recent Cherokee Bluff High School graduate who will study nursing at Brenau University; and Page Thompson, a recent Gainesville High School graduate who will study construction management at Kennesaw State University.

Grand-prize recipient Jaidyn Perry, a recent Johnson High School graduate who will soon move to China to study biology at NYU Shanghai, took home $1,500. Through her education, Perry hopes to become a medical illustrator.
