A leading role

The duties/responsibilities of the mayor include, but aren't limited to:

  • Presiding over meetings of the governing body
  • Being a spokesperson for the City
  • Leading various ceremonial activities like issuing proclamations
  • Executing ordinances, resolutions and other official documents as required by law
  • Serving on various boards/committees on behalf of the City, both locally and statewide

Biography

Sam Couvillon has been a benefits agent with Turner, Wood & Smith (TWS) since summer 2015. Prior to joining TWS, he was with a national firm for eight years working in the Athens/Gainesville market. Couvillon got his start in insurance in 2002 in Jacksonville, Florida, and worked with New England Financial as both a financial planner and employee benefits agent. He graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) in 1994 with a communications degree.

Holding true to the values of TWS, Couvillon is very involved in the community. He currently serves on the Gainesville City Council, in addition to numerous other boards in the community. Couvillon served as the council's Ward 1 representative from 2014-21. He now serves as mayor. He and his wife, Margie, have two children: Sarah Grace, a recent UGA grad; and Molly, a sophomore at Appalachian State University.
