Red Cross Classes and Descriptions

Taught during the months of March, April and May

Waterpark Lifeguard Course - To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies both in a pool and at a waterpark environment. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breast stroke.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Water Safety Instructor Course -- Develop skills and knowledge needed to plan and teach courses under the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age of 16.

  • Have successfully completed Fundamentals of Instructor Training (this is part of the course)
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
  • Swim the following strokes consistently with Stroke Performance:
    • Front Crawl – 25 yards
    • Back Crawl – 25 yards
    • Breaststroke – 25 yards
    • Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
    • Sidestroke – 25 yards
    • Butterfly – 15 yards
  • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
  • Tread water for 1 minute

Taught during the months of September-December

  • CPR / AED for Adult, Child and Infant - Train lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in infants, children, and adults.
  • First Aid - To teach lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives.
