Police Chief Appoints Major

Gainesville Police Chief Brian P. Kelly today announced the promotion of Captain Paul Sherman, a 23 year veteran of the Gainesville Police Department, as his second in command.  Sherman will begin his new position as Major/Assistant Chief with the Gainesville Police Department on Monday, March 5.
Chief Kelly selected Sherman from several internal candidates saying he is extremely knowledgeable about the agency, the community, and the law enforcement profession.  “Paul is a veteran officer who has held numerous positions within the Gainesville Police Department from overseeing the department’s accreditation and state certificationprocesses to field operations and several facets in between.  He has numerous hours in police supervision and management training from attendance at the FBI National Academy to graduating from the Georgia Chiefs of Police Chief Executive Training Program.  I look forward to Paul and I working hand in hand to ensure the Gainesville Police Department is delivering professional police services making our community safe for all of our citizens and visitors,” Chief Kelly said.
Captain Sherman’s job will include assisting the Chief of Police in planning and directing day to day operations of the Police Department by ensuring that policies, programs, and objectives are achieved while assuring all law enforcement services are delivered in a safe, effective, and timely manner to protect life and property of the citizens of Gainesville.
