Operation Pill Drop April 30, 2011

The Gainesville Police Department is proud to announce that is has partnered with Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County and the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County to host “Operation Pill Drop”. The event will be held in Downtown Gainesville on Roosevelt Square on Saturday April 30, 2011 from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm.

Operation Pill Drop is a statewide medication take-back program to prevent accidental poisonings, abuse and misuse. We will be collecting unused, unwanted and expired medications where law enforcement can dispose of them properly. The service is free of charge, and participants can remain completely anonymous. However, illegal substances such as marijuana, methamphetamine, intravenous solutions, and hypodermic needles will not be accepted. There will be a police officer on site to accept the medications. Currently there is no viable recycling solution, and in many cases solid waste facilities, which typically handle recycling and disposal programs, will not accept pharmaceutical waste. An Associated Press investigation found that more than 250 million pounds of pills are flushed each year, posing an environmental problem because many of these compounds are incapable of being filtered out in sewage treatment plants and can possibly return to the water supply.

“As part of our community it is important that the Gainesville Police Department partner with organizations that work to educate the community on the dangers of prescription drugs that are left in areas accessible to our youth.  The abuse of prescription drugs is becoming an ever increasing concern for our communities and to be able to provide a location for our citizens to drop off expired and/ or no longer needed medications is just one way we can work in partnership to increase the safety of our community.  We urge all citizens to take advantage of this program to help make their homes and businesses a safer environment for all.”

Brian P. Kelly Chief of Police
