2011 Municipal Election

The City of Gainesville held a General Election on November 8, 2011 to address Council Member and Board of Education Member seats for Wards 2, 3 and 5.  A Special Election was also held on the same date to address the following referendum question: "Shall the governing authority of Gainesville, Georgia be authorized to permit and regulate package sales by retailers of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits on Sundays between the hours of 12:30 PM and 11:30 PM?"

Qualifying Period

  • August 29th to August 31st
  • Hours:  8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily
  • Location: Mayor's Office located on the third floor of the Administration Building (300 Henry Ward Way) in Suite 304

Qualifications for Council Member Seats

  • A resident of Gainesville for at least one year
  • A resident of his/her ward for at least six months
  • At least twenty-one years of age on election day
  • A nominating petition bearing 50 signatures of registered voters from the ward being sought

Qualifications for Board of Education Member Seats

  • A resident of his/her ward
  • Can not serve on a governing body of a private elementary or secondary educational institution
  • Can not be employed by a local Board of Education
  • Can not be employed by the Department of Education or serving as a member of the State Board of Education
  • Can not have an immediate family member sitting on a local Board of Education or serving as the local School Superintendent or as Principal, Assistant Principal or System Administrative Staff in the local school system
  • Shall file an affidavit affirming he/she meets all qualifications of Georgia Code 20-2-51(e).

  • Council Members - $605.03
  • Board of Education Members - $157.93
